For my husband’s 40th birthday I surprised him with a trip to Colombia for 5 days.  I had not been to South America for over 20 years, and he had never been before at all, so I was elated to make the trip back down south.  From DC, Colombia can be the perfect travel destination for shorter trips.  The weather is always warm, inviting you to pack light and carry on. Flights are often and relatively short.  We decided on Cartagena for the beaches, balmy weather, history and food.  We were not disappointed!

Casa Lola in the neighborhood of Getsemani did not disappoint with it’s gorgeous rooftop pool, amazing service and location and beautiful interiors.

Take a day trip to the Rosario Islands.  We stayed at Paraiso de Mama Ruth, a cheap beachfront palapa hostel.  No frills and cheap but with the beach at your doorstep.

Food was amazing everywhere…from fresh fruit to handmade arepas.  Our favorite restaurant of all was Cande.  I would go back just for another meal there.
